Bath Gardens in Blythe, Georgia is one of the most unique engagement session locations in the Augusta area. With its European-inspired architecture, peaceful ponds, and hidden garden overlooks, it offers an incredible variety of scenery all in one place.
When this couple told me they had always dreamed of having their photos taken at Bath Gardens, I knew it would be the perfect setting for their engagement session. We planned the session for golden hour so we could capture soft natural light across the property and take advantage of the beautiful views around the main home and gardens.
As an Augusta wedding photographer, I love locations that allow couples to move naturally and explore different environments during a session, and Bath Gardens delivers exactly that.

Bath Gardens is a hidden gem in the CSRA with a fascinating history. The 55-acre property was originally transformed between 1958 and 1965 by Alonzo “Lonnie” Boardman, Sr.
What was once a jungle ravine became a European-inspired sanctuary filled with Bavarian-style buildings, natural springs, and six ponds scattered throughout the landscape. Today the property is managed by a foundation dedicated to restoring and preserving the gardens while allowing visitors to experience the beauty of the space.
The mix of historic architecture, peaceful water features, and garden views makes Bath Gardens an incredible place for engagement photos.
We photographed their engagement session during golden hour, which created beautiful natural light across the property.
Bath Gardens offers both shaded areas and open spaces, which makes it easy to create different looks throughout the session. Some areas allowed soft shaded portraits while others gave us warm golden light across the gardens.
One of my favorite parts of the session was photographing them in the canoe on the pond in front of the main home. The reflections in the water and the view of the building behind them created some incredibly romantic photos.
We also explored an overlook area that looks out across the larger garden landscape, giving us wide scenic portraits that showed off the beauty of the property.

The couple chose two outfits for their session, which worked perfectly for this location.
They started with a casual outfit and then the bride-to-be changed into a dress to create a second look. This gave their gallery a great variety of photos and helped the session feel more like two mini shoots in one.
For couples planning engagement photos at Bath Gardens, I usually recommend bringing:
The gardens photograph beautifully with flowy dresses, soft colors, and outfits that allow for movement.

One of the reasons this session worked so well is that the couple was incredibly relaxed and open to trying different poses and movement prompts.
We mixed guided posing with natural movement throughout the session. Some of my favorite moments came from simple prompts like:
These kinds of prompts help couples feel comfortable while still creating photos that feel authentic and natural.
The only real challenge during the session was controlling the canoe while photographing on the pond.
Because the canoe moves easily on the water, we had to carefully position it so the couple stayed centered in the frame while also keeping the main home in the background.
Lighting around the pond also required some adjustments because the sun was peeking through the trees in some areas while other parts of the water were shaded.
By moving around the pond and positioning the couple carefully, we were able to use both the shaded areas and golden light to create a variety of images.
Bath Gardens is one of my favorite engagement session locations near Augusta for several reasons.
The property offers an incredible variety of scenery in one place, including:
This variety allows couples to get multiple looks during their session without needing to travel to multiple locations.
One of the most special parts of working with this couple is that I also had the opportunity to photograph their wedding in February.
Engagement sessions are a great way for couples to get comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding day, and this session helped them feel completely relaxed and natural when their wedding arrived.
If you’re considering engagement photos at Bath Gardens, here are a few tips from my experience photographing there:
Best time of day
Morning or early afternoon typically works best depending on the season, although golden hour can also create beautiful light across the property.
Bring two outfits
One casual outfit and one dressier look helps create more variety in your gallery.
Plan time to explore
There are so many beautiful areas around the gardens that it’s worth allowing time to move between locations during the session.
If you’re planning an engagement session in Augusta, Aiken, or the surrounding CSRA area, I’d love to help you choose a location that fits your style and vision.
